If your family is like mine, missing Christmas is unheard of! A couple years ago my husband and I chose to give our kids the ultimate Christmas gift...A trip to Universal Studios for Spring Break!
We debated telling the kids about our trip after seeing videos of children waking up to be swept away to Disney or Universal, but decided to teach a few life lessons (and have some fun with it) instead…
Lesson #1
“Anything worth having is worth the wait.” ~Unknown
One of the packages under the tree was a framed graphic for us to count down the days leading up to our trip at Spring Break. You can find so many creative options at etsy.com. Our family set up our countdown in the dining room, and the kids took turns changing the numbers.
Lesson #2
“A penny saved is a penny earned.” ~Benjamin Franklin
We included a gift card for each of our kids in their stockings, to be used on our trip. Disney and Universal have great gift card options, and you can find all your kids’ favorite characters. During the two months we counted down to our trip, we included additional gift cards for birthdays, as well as in their Easter baskets. Our kids also saved money from chores completed and change collected.
Tip: Disney gift cards can be purchased at a 5% discount with your Target Red Card at Target stores or Target.com.
Lesson #3
“If you can dream it, you can do it.” ~Walt Disney
This lesson was as much for my husband and me as it was for our kids! First, my husband and I love POP Culture Vacations because we like to plan/budget to pay off our trip the month before we leave for the trip (if not earlier). Secondly, leading up to our trip we try to have a couple ‘planning meetings’ as a family. It’s a fun way to get the kids involved in making sure we don’t miss the rides, attractions, and food they’re looking forward to.
Lesson #4
“Soon we must choose between what is right and what is easy.” ~Albus Dumbledore
Waiting, saving, and planning are not easy for tasks for kids...especially over an extended period of time. We enjoyed building the excitement for our trip, and teaching our kids some valuable lessons. Once we reached our destination, the whole family was able to take in all the fun without worrying about money or missing out. Thanks in part to our POP Culture Agent, as well as our dedication to making the trip happen the right way for our family!
Gifting our vacation to the kids at Christmas made the holidays more magical! And, preparing for the trip brought our family together in a special way we’ll never forget. Of course, the best was saved for last, and we had a blast meeting our favorite characters, riding through our favorite stories, and eating our favorite foods!
